Changing our thoughts...

We used to think...

Now we think....

  1. Our district has become stagnent in writing. We are beginning to have more discussions on best practice for writing. I would appreciate feedback from other educators on what you are using and doing with your students to improve their writing. We have acheivement gaps that are disheartening between our male and female writers. Are other schools finding this? What is being done to accomodate the growing need?

  2. It's interesting to really sit down, read, analyze, and discuss what researchers share about teaching writing. The 11 key elements listed in "Writing Next" by Steve Graham and Dolres Perin state that writing strategies are an integral part of teaching students how to write. As a reading teacher, we know that it is important to teach specific/explicit strategies to learn to read. Likewise as writing teachers, students need writing strategies and need to learn how to use them independently. I would like to learn more about Self regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) to support our budding writers. Are there teachers out there that have used this approach when teaching writing?
